SEND case officer
A Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) case officer plays a critical role in the management and support of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. Serving as the primary point of contact for children, young people, and their families, the SEND case officer ensures the smooth execution of administrative processes in support of EHCP coordinators, and other members of the SEND team.
They provide support and processes related to individuals aged 0-25 living under a council’s care. They offer comprehensive casework management and administrative support to enhance the effectiveness of the council’s SEND service, in accordance with the Children’s & Families Act 2014 and the SEN Code of Practice 2015.
Administrative Management
In the role of SEND case officer, you will manage a caseload of children and young people with special educational needs (SEN), ensuring that all related documentation is processed in a timely and accurate manner. This includes maintaining comprehensive and up-to-date records for each case, adhering strictly to data protection and privacy regulations. Additionally, you will coordinate the administrative processes related to the development, review, and updating of Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).

Support and Development
Providing comprehensive casework management to support the effective delivery of the Council’s SEND Service is essential. Ongoing training and professional development is an important way for case officers to stay current with best practice in SEND support. Additionally, case officers are responsible for developing and disseminating resources and information to families and professionals in order to support the understanding and implementation of EHCPs.
Skills and Qualifications
A relevant degree or qualification in education, social work, or a related field is preferred, along with previous experience in a similar role within an educational, health, or social care setting. A strong understanding of SEND, the statutory assessment process, and relevant legislation (Children’s & Families Act 2014, SEN Code of Practice 2015) is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to convey complex information clearly and sensitively. Strong organisational and time-management skills are necessary to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively. Empathy, patience, and the ability to build strong, supportive relationships with children, families, and professionals are crucial interpersonal skills for this role.
